Around 700 dogs were rescued from a Georgia puppy mill after state inspectors described “inhumane” conditions and charged the owner with animal cruelty.
CBS News reported Friday that 58-year-old Reason Craig Gray of Nashville, Ga. was arrested pending charges of animal cruelty and obstruction of justice.
A total of 715 dogs, most of them puppies, were rescued from the facility, named “Georgia Puppies,” according to CBS.
“There are many questions yet to be answered and one huge one is how this licensed pet dealer was allowed to have an operation with this many beautiful creatures to be able to populate to the point of being out of control and inhumane,” Berrien County Sheriff Ray Paulk told reporters, according to CBS.
“We are currently obtaining more documentation from the veterinarian examinations, retrieving statements, and reviewing the Georgia Department of Agriculture’s reports,” he reportedly added.
A Georgia organization that rescues dogs from animal shelters deemed to be “kill shelters” posted several videos on Facebook of one of the dogs it had taken in from the puppy mill which reportedly only slept standing up even after rescuers offered it a bed.
“He has likely lived his entire life sleeping like this, learning to get comfortable standing, which is why even their toenails grow straight out versus curling,” Releash Atlanta wrote on Facebook.
Previously known to state authorities for at least one overcrowding violation at his facility, Gray was named one of the worst breeders in America by the Humane Society in its 2018 report.
