What started a a nine-hole course in 1968, and grew into an 18-hole gem in 1971, now resembles more a championship course than an 18-hole semi-private facility, that stands on what was formerly a dairy farm.
Austell’s, Dogwood Golf Club, is a real-life Cinderalla Story, except the glass slipper might have to be replaced with a golf shoe with plastic spikes, and since this is golf, we don’t have to worry about that “stroke of midnight” thing.
A shotmaker’s course that plays over 6,000 yards from the white tees, Dogwood harkens back to the days before “Tiger-proofing” became a term used in describing and designing golf courses. A round at Dogwood will force you to use all your clubs, but each hole presents itself to you with a variety of options. While a long hitter could overpower some of Dogwood’s holes, a premium is placed on setting up your next shot.
When many courses started cutting back on upkeep and maintenance in the 2008-2011 years, the powers-that-be at Dogwood had an idea.
In the summer of 2014, Dogwood completed a massive greens project, putting in new Mini Verde greens.
Mini Verde grass is highly stoloniferous and a high shoot density Bermuda grass that has good low temperature color retention. Yes, greens that should stay green, even in the winter months. It appears to be fine with a broad range of soil types and performs well when irrigated with poor quality water. Mini Verde grass is perfect for a course like Dogwood and they are thinking to future when this greens project was completed.
So far, so good say Dogwood officials and members.
“Feedback has been fantastic! It is changing our reputation for the good. Interest in memberships up from previous years.”
Players like the “trueness” of the greens and appreciate all the hard work the superintendent and his crew put in.
