Over the weekend there were tons of great festivals around Georgia, Taste of Marietta, Counterpoint and Athens held it’s annual ‘Twilight Bike Race’ in the downtown area. Since 1980, The Twilight Series are held every spring in Athens and have been a great event for college students to watch. However, some people think these races are poorly officiated and unsafe.
This was the poorest run race I have attended in the past 10 years. Rider safety was not on the list.
We were in turn 4 where there were 3 wrecks in the final race. The pace car driver was an absolute moron and should’ve been pulled from the car earlier during the women’s race by the way he was driving. He jeoprdized not only the racers, but the spectators. – Tracy Moore
Here’s a video that shows bikers crashing in the same spot literally seconds apart from each other. Was the motor ref not warned?
In addition to that, Reddit reports there was a hit and run after the race.
I was just wondering if anybody had any information on it? As I was walking home from Twilight a cyclist was hit by what the police said was a VW Jetta (hit-and-run @ ~11:30) and seemed in pretty bad shape. We didn’t stick around for long as paramedics hadn’t shown up yet and didn’t want to get in the way. I’ve been checking Flagpole, ABH, and the R&B but nothing yet, and was hoping somebody had a positive update. Location was Oconnee x Thomas x Broad 5-way. – LazySamurai
The paramedics eventually showed up, they put her on a stretcher and took her away. I’m pretty sure she will be okay in the long run, but she was in some pretty serious pain I’d say. It’s super fucked up that the car drove off. We gave the police a statement and they took our contact info, but we haven’t heard anything.
The only other info I have for you is that her name is Heather. At one point some drunk girl came over as if to hilariously save the day and insisted on calling Heather’s mom …. so there’s that. – j-mar
