As I sat down watching the digital version of Captain America: Civil War (see my review here), it dawned on me that Georgia may always remain the king of the box office domestically. When adjusted for inflation, the Georgia-filmed epic Gone With The Wind is the HIGHEST GROSSING MOVIE EVER domestically. At a crisp $1.74B by 2016’s scale, that number may NEVER be touched. Or will it?…
Flash forward 77 years and preproduction on two of the biggest films in recent memory, save for sister Disney franchise Star Wars, has begun. Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and an untitled 4th Avengers movie (2019) will be filming concurrently in Georgia, the former being the 10 year culmination/anniversary of the loose, yet connected story building in the wildly successful Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Now I know a lot of people may have superhero fatigue at this point, but one thing I’ve learned during this 8 year boom of the MCU is… always bet on that Mickey Money. Disney’s amalgamation of franchises into one universe is now one of the highest grossing ever ($10B+) and the most mimicked in the film industry. Their movies are formulaic by nature with very little deviation from a set story each film, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing… I guess. I can genuinely say that I had fun growing up anticipating and watching their films, save for a few, as an amateur critic, movie goer and avid comic book fan. I’ll probably write my thoughts about the quality of Marvel’s movies and the superhero genre as a whole in another post, but for now let me get you the info you came here for.
As I mentioned earlier, 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War and the untitled 2019 Avengers movie will be filming concurrently in Georgia beginning in November of 2016 and carrying well into summer 2017. Central Casting is now looking for background, stand-ins, photo doubles and featured roles. This will be the first film entirely shot in IMAX.
For those who don’t know, this film will feature the currently underutilized, for good reason, villain Thanos (Josh Brolin). If you’ve read the comics, you understand why it has taken so long to get to this point. Thanos will undoubtedly test the Avengers and *spoiler alert* kill A LOT of them, seeing how a lot of the original actors’ contracts are up with this film. Just for a gauge on how powerful Thanos truly is in the comics, he assembled the infinity gems/stones, placed them in the Infinity Gauntlet, snapped his finger and wiped out HALF THE LIFE IN THE UNIVERSE.
Needless to say, this will probably be the biggest film in Marvel’s history and may challenge for the highest grossing all time. I will try and keep you updated as more calls come out! Do you think it will beat Gone With The Wind’s MASSIVE domestic total though? Let me know in the comments.
