There is no shortage of Italian eateries in Sandy Springs and North Buckhead, but it was refreshing to see the team behind Buckhead’s award-winning restaurant Mission + Market, brothers Jonathan and Ryan Akly and Chef Ian Winslade, bring their Italian restaurant concept, Tre Vele, to Sandy Springs. The fun and the great food and drink offerings open on Monday, Sept. 20 to the public. Tre Vele features a 3,500-square-foot dining room, 1,500-square-foot rooftop terrace and a 600-square-foot market and café and specializes in fresh, handmade pasta, pizza, and other traditional Italian dishes with a modern twist. I love the surprises they throw in!
“We’re ecstatic to welcome guests into Tre Vele as the newest gathering spot for upscale Italian cuisine,” said Partner and Co-Owner Jonathan Akly. “When guests step inside, they will feel as if they have entered a cozy space with comforting Italian dishes and drinks with a modern twist. For the guests that want a morning coffee and pastry, we have that too in our café. For the guests that want a meal on-the-go, or freshly made pasta and sauce to create a dish in the comfort of home, our market will be their new go to.”
My night at Tre Vele began with a walk around the restaurant. Tre Vele features vibrant greens alongside a 30-foot Carrara marble bar, exposed brick wall, and natural wood accents in a fresh, modern atmosphere. Tony Akly and the Restaurants Consulting Group, Inc., an award-winning full-service design-build firm with a focus on hospitality, restaurant, bar, and nightclub design, led the architectural and interior design of the airy and bright space. The market and café features indoor/outdoor seating, floor to ceiling wine and retail displays, and a glass-enclosed pasta room. Just up the stairs from the dining room is the open-air, wraparound rooftop terrace that includes a bar, fire pits, and string lights imitating a starry night sky. Outside of the music being a little loud, the setting is ideal.
In collaboration with Chef/Partner Ian Winslade, Executive Chef Giancarlo Ruiz (formerly of Storico Fresco) will be at the helm of the kitchen. Tre Vele’s menu will change seasonally and will launch with a menu including fresh pastas such as cacio e pepe, strozzapreti with vegan kale pesto, and ricotta and spinach stuffed cappelletti. The menu will also include a wide variety of antipasti, salads, and secondi (entrees) like red wine braised oxtail, grilled branzino, and veal Milanese. Dessert options include tiramisu, blood orange panna cotta, and a warm plum crostada. The tiramisu was awesome and even though I’m not really a dessert eater, I was glad I tried my portion.
Separate from the main dining menu, Tre Vele offers an Italian market and café lined up with rich, European pastries baked daily by Pastry Chef Jae Eun Park, specialty coffee drinks, house-made pastas, sauces, and prepared meals to-go. Additionally, the market will retail a carefully curated selection of Italian wines while also hosting wine tastings, wine dinners, pasta making classes and private events. Surprises included a delicious meat and cheese plate with delicious little cherrys thrown in to delight your pallet, a large and varied wine list and a beautifully laid out dining room.
Tre Vele’s initial hours for dinner are Monday through Thursday 4 p.m.-10 p.m. and Friday through Saturday 4 p.m.-11 p.m. Tre Vele plans to add lunch and brunch shortly after opening. The café and retail hours are scheduled to be Monday through Friday 8 a.m.-8 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m.-7 p.m. with plans to offer lunch to-go options alongside the retail offerings.
