World-renowned illustrator, author, comic strip artist, and songwriter, Guy Gilchrist (best known as Jim Henson’s cartoonist) will appear at Galactic Quest comic books stores in both Lawrenceville, GA (1116 East Crogan Street) and in Buford, GA (4264 Sudderth Rd) on April 14 & 15, respectively.
This is a rare opportunity to interact with one of the great illustrators of our time.
About Guy:
At the age of 24, he was hand-selected to draw the “Muppets” comic strip (printed worldwide in 660-plus newspapers daily from 1981 to 1986)
Gilchrist’s panel led to the creation of “The Muppet Babies”
Guy was also instrument in the creation of Henson’s “Fraggle Rock”
In 1984, some of the iconic Muppets artwork was enshrined in the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C. and was declared a National Treasure by then First Lady, Nancy Reagan
When the “Muppets” comic strip came to an end, Guy worked for a number of years on “Tiny Toons” and “Looney Tunes” books (if you were a child in the 80s, you probably have one of his books)
Throughout the years, Gilchrist has also set his hand to some of the most beloved, high-profile cartoons, such as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Tom & Jerry, The Pink Panther, Minnie Mouse, and more
In 1995, Gilchrist took over the daily comic strip “Nancy,” created in 1938 by Ernie Bushmiller. For over 22 years (from 1995 – 2018), Guy continued the story of Nancy, Sluggo, Aunt Fritzi and all the characters of the internationally distributed strip before stepping away to pursue other interests
Gilchrist is also an award-winning writer and illustrator of children’s books (42 titles to his name, including the acclaimed “Night Lights & Pillow Fights”, which earned Reuben Awards from the National Cartoonists Society in the Best Book Illustrator category in both 1998 and 1999, and three Children’s Choice Awards by the International Reading Council)
CURRENT BOOK PROJECT:
On October 5, 2020, “Monster Dance,” (penned by Eva Lou with illustrations by Gilchrist, and published by Madeleine Editions) was released internationally (available in over 170 countries) as both an animated, interactive Apple book or physical book
“Monster Dance,” the FIRST animated and interactive multi-media book (also available in hard-back) aimed at helping young children (ages 3-6) “tame” the COVID monster through safety precautions like wearing a mask and washing your hands, but leaves the youngest readers with the lasting and hopeful message that living with a virus– or any sickness–isn’t just about “waiting it out,” but to make every day count and to grow with joy.
The book was written at the urging of Dr. Karen Tsai, who was completing her residency in a Los Angeles hospital and saw the lack of understanding and fear in her young patients.
Penned by Madeleine Editions founder Eva Lou (Indie Book, Family Choice awards) the book is narrated by different celebrities: the English edition is voiced by the acclaimed actor Denis O’Hare (“True Blood,” “Late Night”), and Taiwanese supermodel Chiling Lin (林志玲) for the Mandarin edition
Copies of the book have been donated to a number of children’s hospitals (including the UCLA Mattel Children’s Hospital, East Tennessee Children’s Hospital), and has been approved and incorporated into many school curriculums.
For every copy sold, a donation of masks is made to assist healthcare heroes around the world through the non-profit partner, DonatePPE.org.
