On May 20, 2017 at 6PM at Kat’s Cafe; Sexual Abuse Speaks Out (SASO) will host it’s first annual Slam 4 SAAM event in Georgia.
Sexual Abuse Speak Out (SASO) was founded in Chicago, IL in 2012 as a non-profit organization to help raise awareness and funding for victims of sexual abuse and assault. After family members and a close friend was sexually abused, founder Wendy Jordan realized it was time to raise awareness. Sexual Abuse Speaks Out understands it’s a long emotional road ahead but the first step is to speak out.
April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month and since 2012, SASO SLAM4SAAM (a poetry event for sexual assault/abuse) has donated to foundations such as RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network), Chicago Children’s Advocacy Center and the YWCA (Young Women’s Christian Association). SASO raises awareness and funding to help surivivors obtain resources needed such as hotline assistance, victim assistance, programs and services and educating the public.
In May 2017 SASO hopes to educate communities and raise funding as they host their 1st Annual Poetry SLAM4SAAM (Sexual Assault Awareness in May) in Georgia. They have an awesome line up of poets and courageous survivors that share will their stories and testimonies to give others the courage to speak out. SASO is partnering with the Georgia Center for Child Advocacy and proceeds will benefit the center. The GCCA provides forensic interviews at the request of law enforcement, advocacy and support for children and families for sexually and physically abused children, provide professional training and much more. SASO believes if they can help just one person to a better emotional state or lead them toward the direction of healing, it’s well worth it.
SASO provide volunteer services for different organizations in Georgia. Their goal is to volunteer once a month at a selected organization. SASO has worked with the Neighbor Love with the delivery of Valentines goodies for senior citizens, feed the homeless, and providing the Georgia Center for Child Advocacy with wish list items. SASO volunteering moto is “Loving What We Do!”
