Rap had another successful year here in Atlanta. As the city continues have a choke-hold on the quintessential sonics of America rap & hip-hop, 2015 clearly did not disappoint. Migos continued their dominance, Future became the phoenix that arose from the ashes, some new dances emanated, Atlanta did exactly what we’re known to do. Here I’ve compiled the top rap songs composed from an Atlanta artist, take a look below.
9. Young Thug – Bestfriend
Young Thug dropped some great mixtapes in 2015, especially with “Slime Season 1 & 2”. The city of Atlanta is slowly coming around to Young Thug and overlooking some of his weird behavior. He had a rather quiet year compared to his 2014 run but this song, “Bestfriend” kept him buzzing.
8. Run The Jewels – Bust No Moves
If you’re a fan of quality hip-hop and you’re not listening to Run The Jewels, you’re simply losing. Coming off a strong season with Run The Jewels 2 and their cat themed remixed album, Meow The Jewels, Killer Mike and El-P prove time and time again that if you’re sleeping on them, it’s better you stayed asleep. This song appeared on Run the Jewels special record store day release on April 18th, 2015. It was the only new track on the vinyl.
7. Pipe It Up – Migos
Migos continue to make a stamp on the game after creating hits like, One-Time and Pipe It Up. They released Yung Rich Nation, Back to the Bando and they helped make ‘the dab’ a world-wide phenomenon. Even after going jail for their Georgia Southern incident, they are still prevailing through the darkness.
6. Fell In The Sun – Big Boi
Big Boi is still killing everything, if you haven’t heard Big Grams go get it now. This year he teamed up with electronic rock duo Phantogram to create a sound that many hip-hop artist can create.
5. This Could Be Us – Rae Sremmurd
It’s impossible to not like Rae Sremmurd at this point, they make too many hits. Created a hit record based off of a “social media phrase” seen on memes, this will always work as long as it’s relevant. We’re seeing the same thing with Yo Gotti’s “Down in the DM” single out now. They shoot this video in South Africa as they play with leopards and make FaceTime calls, making it evident that you’re missing out.
4. Flex (Ooh, Ooh, Ooh) – Rich Homie Quan
Rich Homie Quan had a relatively quiet year but after “Flex” dropped earlier in 2015, you could hear it playing all across Atlanta. Maybe he’s relaxing after making $2 million off a mixtape.
3. Future – F*ck Up Some Commas
“The ATL spaceman burns through thousands, hundred thousands, any amount of money with a comma in it, claiming his bold-as-love handle “Future Hendrix.” He also boasts about pushing powder so white he calls it “the Katy Perry.” How much does he charge for the Bieber?” – Rolling Stone
2. “Whip/Nae Nae” – Silento
The most viral dance across the nation this year was all because of Silento. While Atlantans don’t credit Silento with either of these dances, he successfully commercialized for the masses. Now news anchors are doing it..
1. Future – March Madness
Undeniably the greatest rap song to come from an Atlanta artist this year. Nuff’ said..
