In 2013 a local brand burst onto the fashion scene of Atlanta. You’ve probably seen it, heard of it, or maybe even own a couple of items. Stay (+), a simple yet poignant message, now stitched across the crowns of hundreds of people around the globe. Enter Tialer Scott, aka Flockaland, the charming 22 year old behind this explosion of positive vibes. I recently caught up with her as she prepared to celebrate her 1 year anniversary of Stay (+). We talked about the early success of the line, the future, & how the power of social media helped her brand blossom.
We were just talking about the first time we ever spoke on the phone, to you now about to celebrate your 1 year anniversary. Are you surprised at the success you’ve garnered so early?
I’m very surprised at the success I have gained so early. But at the same time I feel many are drawn to Stay (+) because of its message. We live in a world that can bring you down every second of the day. An uplifting message like “Stay (+)” can be a reminder to literally stay positive in life, stay true to yourself, and remain positive so people around you can feed off positive vibes as well.
When did you first start designing?
I first started designing in 2007 for a clothing brand I wanted to start up for tall women but I never put it into existence.
Who or what inspired you to become a designer & start your Stay (+) movement? Was it always something you always knew you would do?
My grandmother is my inspiration, she’s the most positive person I know. She always tells me to stay positive and live life avoiding negativity. I’ve wanted my own hat line since I was 15, but I never would have imagined my life now as a designer and owning my own brand. I am currently in school for nursing but didn’t not expect my path in life to make this turn for the better.
How has the word of mouth/ social media aspect helped you with branding?
word-of-mouth/social media, such as Twitter and Instagram, made Stay (+) what it is today. The brand is based out of Atlanta, a city where word-of-mouth with any information, good or bad, spreads quick. I started promoting myself, then my friends started supporting me, others look into my brand and started supporting me and purchasing hats and that’s how Stay (+) grew into the brand it is today.
Your line has been spotted on many different celebrities. Who was one of your favorites to don a Stay (+) beanie and why?
One of my favorite celebrities to wear Stay (+) is Trinidad James. He’s more than a celebrity to me, he’s my childhood friend. He helped me take the brand to the next level as far as publicity and I am forever thankful of him for doing that. I am also thankful for Isaiah Rashad of TDE for supporting me since day one. One of the celebrities I am most excited about that supports Stay (+) is Wiz Khalifa. He’s very nice and easy going in person and to have his support is pretty awesome.
Tell us about your new collection and what inspired you to move into clothing?
My new collection for the winter consist of crewnecks. I really wanted to give my customers something exclusive to look forward to. The crewneck’s are embroidered, not heat pressed or screen printed, they are long-lasting and good quality one can wash and wear over and over.
What are your plans for the future?
My plans for the future as of now is to work on the growth and exposure of Stay (+). I would also love to give speeches at group homes, hospitals, places of that nature about remaining positive in life, etc.
What is your advice to other aspiring designers, that would also love to have a successful career in this business?
My advice to other designers on the come up is to never give up. There has been many occasions where I feel like I can’t go on, but when that feeling comes around there has always been blessings right around the corner. Be sure to choose your friends wisely, surround yourself with people that are supportive and loyal. Most importantly be patient. Rome was not built in a day and neither has any successful brand out now. Everything takes time and has it’s time to shine. Work hard and everything will come into place.
